The Foundational Research for Relaxed Alertness

What is a state of mind? Neuroscientist Daniel Siegel (1999) defines state as “the total pattern of activations in the brain at a particular moment in time” (p. 230). Any state actually combines aspects of body, mind, and emotions, so it is psychophysiological. In trying to describe a state, a person might say any of these statements:

  1. “I believe something to be true.”
  2. “I feel something in my emotions and body.”
  3.  “I am acting on the basis of how I feel and what I believe.”

Class Structure and Rules

Allow students to help set classroom rules to give them ownership in the discipline process. Post the rules and consequences in the room.

Integrate correct behavior and accountability instruction into your lesson plan. Hold each student accountable for her actions and don't allow the blame game.

Discipline students privately. This demonstrates respect and protects the student from public humiliation.

Praise the children frequently and find something positive to say about each student.

Stick to the rules and fairly and consistently execute the consequences.

Happy Kids, Happy Days

Teaching should feel good, students should be happy and academics should be a team effort.
